My name is Dr. Kajal Patel, and I am a medical doctor and psychiatry registrar, having obtained my medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, followed by a Diploma in Mental Health. These qualifications marked the foundation of what has since grown into a deeply rooted and evolving career in mental health care and education.

Through several years of hands-on clinical experience in psychiatry—spanning community service, medical officer time, and multidisciplinary clinical settings—I have developed a nuanced understanding of psychiatric illness within the South African context. This journey has reinforced my belief in compassionate, evidence-based, and holistic care, as well as the critical role that well-trained clinicians play in improving mental health outcomes.

Alongside my clinical work, I remain deeply passionate about teaching and medical education. I have seen firsthand how gaps in psychiatric knowledge can leave doctors feeling underprepared, and how targeted, practical education can transform both confidence and patient care. This conviction is what led me to create NEURON ED—a platform dedicated to providing accessible, clinically relevant mental health education for doctors across South Africa.

My goal is to bridge the gap between theory and practice by equipping doctors with the skills, insight, and confidence needed to manage psychiatric conditions effectively. Through education, mentorship, and clinical excellence, I am committed to contributing to a stronger, more responsive mental health system.
