About NUSHU

"Nü shu," in traditional Chinese, translates to "women's writing." It was a secret language of uncertain antiquity, created by women and exclusively for women.

What we know for certain is that it was used for centuries. However, with the inclusion of women in China’s formal educational system, nü shu has fallen into disuse, leaving only a handful of women today who can still understand this unique form of expression.

Some time ago, I learned that the words "text" and "textile" share the same root in the Latin word texere, meaning "to weave." This realization resonated deeply with me because I truly believe that when we, women, weave, we are writing our stories—our thoughts, emotions, and experiences—into every thread.

Going beyond ink and paper, our writing takes shape through yarn, threads, needles, and looms, merging with our ideas to create something tangible and profound. Though our writing may sometimes remain hidden—whether in the past or present—it feels inevitable to me that when we connect with these threads, we are also connecting with ourselves and with all women, across generations, in one continuous thread of shared history.

Weaving connects us all.

With love,

Dani.
