I was not born with a silver spoon. I did not grow up with anyone sitting me down and teaching me how credit works. What I got instead was my credit stolen before I was old enough to know what credit even was. My father was using my name while I was still a child. As a child. Accounts opened. Debts accumulated. All in my name. By the time I turned 18 and tried to get my first apartment I had no idea what was waiting for me. Every application. Every attempt to move forward. Every time I tried to get a place of my own I was hit with collections, denials and debt I never created. I was starting my adult life already buried under someone else’s decisions and I had no idea how to get out. Being a single mother on top of that made every wall higher. I needed to move. I needed stability. I needed people to stop turning me away for something that was done to me before I was old enough to protect myself. I got sick and tired of asking people to cosign for me. Sick of depending on somebody else just to have a roof. Sick of paying credit repair companies money I did not have to fix something I did not break. Sick of being told no over and over again for a situation I never chose. So I stopped asking for help and I started doing the work myself. I sat down. I learned the laws. I learned exactly what my rights were. I learned what debt collectors are legally required to do, what credit bureaus are required to investigate and what federal protections exist specifically for people who have been through exactly what I went through. And I used every single one of them.
