Why I haven't simply added a document button to Road & Ready

I was asked a fair question about Road & Ready: if it keeps the dates, service history and costs of a car, why can't it hold the documents too?

The current shop version is an organiser for information you enter yourself. It gives MOT, tax, insurance and service dates a place, along with repairs, fuel, quotes and recorded spending. But the actual policy, invoice or service sheet still lives wherever you choose to keep it. I can see why that feels like an unfinished part of the picture.

Adding an upload button is the easy part. The harder question is what happens to that file afterwards. Can you find it again under the right vehicle? Can you take it out when you need to send it to someone? If you move computers, does the backup really bring the attachment with the rest of the record?

I have built a separate review version that tries to answer those questions. It has a Document drawer for PDF and image files attached to a selected car. You can add a type and a short note, then export an individual file when you choose. The complete project backup is designed to carry the attachments as well as the entries, and the app refuses to call a backup complete if a referenced file is missing.

There is an important limit here. The files are kept in that browser on that device. The app does not read their contents, pull dates out of them or send them anywhere. It does not sync or encrypt the browser storage or the downloaded backup. That means I would still keep the originals, protect any backup I export and think carefully before adding sensitive paperwork on a shared computer.

The review build has passed its code and storage tests, including a test of backup and restore. A real upload and restore through the locally opened app still needs a hands-on browser check. Until that has passed, I am keeping the document version separate from the live download. It would be misleading to describe the current Road & Ready listing as a document vault.

This small addition has made me think about what a useful app should promise. A document drawer is helpful only when the buyer understands where the file is, what the backup contains and what the app does not protect. The same clarity matters for dates and costs: Road & Ready shows what you have recorded, while official information and the original paperwork still need checking at their source.

You can see the current Road & Ready car organiser on Payhip. It covers dates, care, fuel and costs; document uploads are still in review.
