These downloads are mainly about merchant ships of the obscure or semi-obscure types, ranging from small coasters to large passenger liners, sail, steam or diesel powered. My main field of interest is between the years of about 1850 and 1965. I was at sea myself in merchant ships between early 1961 and late 1992. I served mainly in passenger liners, but also colliers, iron ore carriers, general cargo ships, a tanker, a bulk carrier, one wood pulp ship, a log carrier, and a small container ship. The smallest one I served in was the small North Sea collier Wandsworth, and the largest was the Union-Castle passenger liner RMS Windsor Castle. My final 13 years were spent in RMS St Helena (I) and RMS St Helena (II) Two small passenger liners running to Cape Town from the UK via the islands of Canaries, Ascension, St Helena, and occasionally Tristan da Cunha. Most of these downloads describe how to build miniature models of a variety of merchant ships both large and small, sail and powered. Also some larger downloads covering my time at sea in various ship types. And a few on building small vintage-type radio sets using valves. Using my special techniques, I believe that my model shipbuilding instructions bring the hobby within the scope of most people who are moderately handy with using small tools, and who want to get away from the rather expensive hobby of building large kits that have been modelled ad infinitum - Cutty Sark, Titanic etc. As the materials cost very little, there is not much to lose if you find that you are not successful.
