How to get Auction Experience Before You Get Licensed

How can you get experience in the auction industry before Auctioneer School?

How to Get Auction Experience Before You Get Your License

Experience within the auction industry is not required to attend auctioneer school, but it can help you decide whether the industry is for you.

Auctions in general require a diverse workforce with each member of the team bringing a unique skill set and experience to the event.

Auctions are not just the person on the mic. Auctions require multiple steps before the bidding ever begins.

Are you detailed oriented? You might be a good fit to help cataloguing an auction. In addition to cataloguing, set up can include everything from washing down vehicles and equipment to staging furniture.

All you need is problem solving skills, a good attitude, and work ethic!

Are you good with a camera or editing software? You can help take photographs of items up for auction. If you can help edit the photos and video, you will be in high demand. And if operating a drone is your thing, real estate auctioneers can always use help with that!

What about the tasks that are necessary on auction day? Large crowds often mean that parking assistance is needed. Auction houses may also need help with check-in/check-out or clerking the auction. Love being in front of a crowd and asking for the sale? Working the ring might be a good fit! Sometimes, just having an extra person to help move items in and out of the sale ring is a blessing to the auction house.

Auction load out help is also in high demand. Whether live or online, auctions need people to monitor buyers, check of invoices, moving items, and even assisting with the loading of merchandise/inventory.

Be an extra set of hands on auction day!

On auction day, countless tasks, both large and small, are completed. These include helping with parking, assisting with both check-in and check-out, clerking, or working the auction ring. Even the smallest auction company needs a large staff for auction day.

Help with auction load out!

For both live auctions and online auctions, the load out and removal of items by the winning bidders often demands a team of people. Auction load out tasks include checking invoices, monitoring customers, and assisting with loading, and moving inventory.

Auction events require lots of teamwork and each task is important—no matter how small it may seem. And just because you are hired to help with a certain task doesn’t mean the auction company might not ask you to help with something else that day.

A willingness to learn and to help is really the best asset for anyone looking to get auction experience.
