About Me

My name is Tamika D. Smith, and I am an author, medical gaslighting survivor, thought-provoking speaker, health advocate, and inclusive model. I am an alumna of the University of Holy Cross College in New Orleans, holding a Bachelor of Science in Social Counseling with a focus on Research and Advanced Psychology. My journey with chronic illness began when I was diagnosed with Endometriosis in 2019, followed by Lupus. Since then, I have dedicated my life to raising awareness, advocating for better healthcare experiences, and empowering others to take control of their health.

I have had the privilege of sharing my story on national and international platforms, including The Tamron Hall Show (Medical Gaslighting Episode), BlackDoctor.org, Ladies Edition Podcast, The Grio, and Your Self-Care Prescription Podcast with Dr. Alisha Reed. My advocacy work has also led me to a national commercial for Super Bowl LIX and to collaborate with esteemed healthcare professionals such as Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell, a leader in health advocacy, health equity, and health literacy, as well as Dr. Keita Vanterpool.

In addition to my media appearances, I have participated in multiple public speaking engagements, including as a panelist for the Endo Echo Educational Workshop alongside Dr. Kenneth Barron and as a guest speaker for Memorial Hermann Hospital, where I shared my Lupus journey, addressed medical gaslighting, and provided insights on cost-effective complementary and alternative medicine.

My advocacy efforts have also been recognized through an official proclamation in New Orleans declaring May as Lupus Awareness Month—a testament to my commitment to bringing visibility to this often-overlooked condition.

Additionally, I have contributed to Dazed, Well + Good, and Living 360, using my voice to shed light on the realities of living with chronic illness and the importance of self-advocacy.

This eBook is more than just my story; it is the story of countless individuals who have fought to be heard in a healthcare system that often dismisses their pain. Through raw storytelling and documented experiences, I shine a light on the harsh realities of medical gaslighting and the deep emotional and physical toll it takes on both patients and their families. Some did not make it through this journey, their voices silenced by a system that failed to listen. I am here to be their voice, speaking up for those who were unheard and advocating for the change we need in healthcare.

But this journey is not just about the struggle—it is also about healing. Healing does not come easily after years of being unheard, misdiagnosed, and neglected. It requires strength, perseverance, faith, and a support system that believes in you even when doctors do not.

A Rare Insight: Exclusive excerpts from my son and mother, who share their firsthand experiences of watching me suffer, feeling helpless, and fighting alongside me. Their words offer a poignant look at the ripple effect of chronic illness—not just on the patient, but on the entire family.

This book is for anyone seeking to understand the realities of medical gaslighting, its devastating effects, and the power of advocacy. Whether you are a patient, caregiver, or healthcare professional, my hope is that this story touches your heart, opens your eyes, and ignites the change we so desperately need in healthcare.
