Some people think I’m kidding when I say I use items from my "Neuro SLP Memory Bundle" everyday at work.
"EVERYDAY?", they say.
Yes, EVERY workday, I see patients in my outpatient brain injury clinic who have mild to moderate memory challenges, and EVERYDAY these same patients are able to benefit from the various patient handouts, graphics, therapy activities, and metamemory training included in my 42-page Memory Bundle.
See for yourself down below. Check out several of the different ways I'm able to incorporate Memory Bundle items into my memory intervention with my neurorehab patients... EVERYDAY.
1.) I use the "Identifying Personal Memory Demands" Activity to help patients identify their daily memory demands and most problematic/common memory lapses
2.) I use the "How Do You Remember?" Handout and the "Using Phone Apps for Memory & Organization" Activity to explain to patients the concept of “cognitive offloading” and the value of external memory aids
3.) I use the “Considerations When Selecting External Memory Aids” Handout to help patients choose the BEST external memory aid for them (based on their individual needs and features of the aid)
4.) I use the “Identifying Memory Problems & Solutions” Brainstorming Chart and the "How Do You Remember?" Handout to help patients establish routines that fit their lifestyle... to reduce the likelihood of daily memory lapses
5.) I use the “How WOULD You Remember?” Activity and the “Using Phone Apps for Memory & Organization" Activity to help patients practice using external memory aids in REAL TIME with REAL INFORMATION
6.) I use the “How WOULD You Remember?” Activity, the “Using Internal Memory Strategies in (9) Everyday Scenarios” and the “Internal Memory CHALLENGES” Guide to train patients and practice using INTERNAL memory strategies with REAL INFO
7.) I use the “Identifying Memory Problems & Solutions” Brainstorming Chart and "How Do You Remember?" Handout to collaborate with patients on solutions for common memory lapses at work, at home, or in community
8.) I use the “Using Internal Memory Strategies in (9) Everyday Scenarios” Activity and the “Using External Memory Aids & Modifications in (9) Everyday Scenarios” Activity to review real life scenarios with patients in which external memory aids and/or internal memory strategies can be beneficial
9.) I use the “Metamemory Reflection Questions” Handout and the "How WOULD You Remember?" Activity to discuss with patients their options for meeting new/evolving memory demands
These are just a few different ways I’ve successfully integrated Memory Bundle items into my daily speech therapy sessions with patients with mild to moderate memory deficits. Patients love the fact that everything we do using the Memory Bundle is evidence-informed, practical, and personally relevant to the memory challenges they face. Memory Bundle items allow us to be flexible in speech therapy sessions, yet still engage in meaningful work.
