The RAS and EFT Tapping

Why Your Clients Stay Stuck (And What EFT Tapping Does About It)

A note for DreamBuilder™ and other coaches from Jan Caimano

Have you ever worked with a client who completely understood their Vision Statement... but couldn’t seem to feel it?

They could recite it. They believed in it intellectually. They did the work. And yet something kept pulling them back — the same self-doubt, the same fear, the same invisible ceiling showing up week after week.

If that sounds familiar, I want to share something with you. Something that changed the way I work with clients — and that I believe is one of the most powerful between-session tools you can offer the people you coach

.

It’s called EFT tapping. And once you understand how it connects to the RAS, you’ll see exactly why it works so well alongside the DreamBuilder system.

First — What Is the RAS?

The Reticular Activating System is a network of neurons at the base of your brain. Its job is to filter reality.

Here’s why that matters: your senses are receiving somewhere between two million and eleven million bits of information every single second. Sights, sounds, sensations, everything happening around you all at once. If your conscious mind tried to process all of that, you’d be completely overwhelmed within moments.

So the brain developed this remarkable filtering system — the RAS — that screens out almost everything and surfaces only what it determines is relevant to you.

And here’s the crucial question: how does the RAS decide what’s relevant?

It filters based on your dominant thoughts, beliefs, and emotional patterns. It confirms whatever you’re already focused on — consciously or unconsciously.

This is why, when you’re thinking about buying a red car, you suddenly start seeing red cars everywhere. Those cars were always there. Your RAS just wasn’t tuned to them before.

This is why Mary Morrissey teaches that your Vision Statement works — because you’re deliberately training the RAS to look for evidence of your dream rather than evidence of your limitations.

So Why Do Clients Keep Getting Pulled Back?

Here’s where it gets important for coaches.

A client writes a beautiful Vision Statement. It’s specific. It passes the Five Point Test. It feels genuinely expansive. But somewhere beneath that Vision — in the nervous system, not the conscious mind — an old signal is still broadcasting.

It might sound like: People like me don’t get to live like that. Or: Every time I get my hopes up, something goes wrong. Or simply: I’m not sure I really deserve this.

That old signal has a frequency. And as long as it’s broadcasting, the RAS uses it as its tuning point. No matter how many times that client reads their Vision Statement, part of the nervous system is still filtering for evidence of the old story. Evidence of limitation. Evidence of not enough.

This is not a failure of the client. This is not a failure of the DreamBuilder tools. This is the nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do — maintaining the current setpoint.

Sound familiar? Mary calls this the internal thermostat. The limiting paradigm that keeps pulling us back to what’s familiar, no matter how high we try to turn the dial.

What EFT Tapping Does That Other Tools Don’t

EFT — Emotional Freedom Techniques — combines gentle tapping on specific acupressure points on the face and upper body with honest, compassionate acknowledgment of what’s emotionally true in the moment.

When we tap while holding a specific fear, belief, or memory in mind, we send a calming signal directly to the amygdala — the brain’s alarm center. The stress response begins to de-escalate. And over time, the emotional charge attached to that limiting thought actually neutralizes.

The thought doesn’t disappear. But it loses its power to drive the same contractive response in the body.

I love this analogy: imagine you burned your hand on a stove as a child. You still remember it happened. EFT doesn’t erase that memory. What it does is remove the flinch — the automatic physical recoil — every time you walk near a stove.

And this is not fringe science. EFT has been the subject of more than 100 peer-reviewed studies. It is recognized as an evidence-based intervention by the American Psychological Association. The VA and military health systems use it with veterans experiencing PTSD. The research is solid and growing.

The Connection That Changes Everything

The Vision Statement tells the RAS what to look for. EFT removes the emotional static that’s been blocking the signal.

When the charge around a limiting belief is neutralized — when the nervous system stops broadcasting the old frequency — the RAS becomes genuinely available to retune. The Vision Statement doesn’t just make sense in the head. It starts to land in the body.

That’s when clients stop intellectually understanding their dream and begin to feel themselves living it.

Think about the Five D’s. Mary teaches that DefCon1 generates real physical responses — sweaty palms, racing heart, waking up at three in the morning wondering what on earth you’ve done. Conscious Breathing is a powerful tool for calming that response in the moment.

EFT goes one step further. Used consistently between sessions, it doesn’t just calm the acute fear response — it actually works on the underlying pattern over time, so that DefCon1 triggers less frequently and with less intensity. The same is true for Dissuasion, Disdain, and Deficiency thinking. Anywhere a client understands the bridge they need to cross but can’t seem to get their nervous system to take the first step — that’s exactly where EFT lives.

What This Means for You as a Coach

You don’t need to become an EFT practitioner to bring the benefits of tapping to your clients. Here are three simple ways to start:

Use it for yourself first. A regulated nervous system is your most important coaching asset. When your own not-enough is met with kindness and released, you become a different kind of presence in the room — calmer, freer, more genuinely open. You can’t take your clients further than you yourself have traveled.

Offer it as a between-session resource. Pre-recorded tapping meditations give clients a tool they can use on their own, in their own time, at their own pace. No certification required — just a resource that supports the work you’re already doing together.

Notice where your clients are stuck. When a client keeps returning to the same limiting thought despite coaching, despite the tools, despite their genuine desire to move forward — consider whether there’s an emotional charge beneath the surface that tapping might reach.

COMING IN MAY! A Complete Library Built for DreamBuilder Coaches

Over the past two years, I’ve been creating EFT tapping meditations specifically designed to support the DreamBuilder journey — week by week, theme by theme.

The library includes a complete 12-week DreamBuilder series: three 7–10 minute tapping meditations and one Quick Tapping Reset for every week of the program. Each meditation is designed to support the specific emotional terrain your clients are navigating that week — from the vulnerability of beginning something new in Week 1, through befriending fear in Week 7 and the forgiveness work of Week 8, all the way through to celebrating completion and carrying the dream forward in Week 12.

These are recordings your clients can use between your sessions — on their own, at their own pace, as many times as they need. And because they’re built around the DreamBuilder framework, they speak the same language your clients are already learning.

You’ll find the full library at YourTappingCoach.com.

Ready to Experience It for Yourself?

The best way to understand what EFT tapping offers is to feel it — even just once. Browse the library, choose a meditation that resonates with where you are right now, and let yourself have the experience.

Because here’s what I know after years of working with clients as a hypnotherapist, an EFT practitioner, and a DreamBuilder coach:

Mary Morrissey says you cannot get to your dream — you must come from it.

EFT helps your clients release what’s been keeping them from it... so they can finally, freely, and fully live from it.
