Year 5 Term 3 Homeschool Program
Year 5 – Term 3
Legacy & Leadership
This Year 5 Term 3 learning program is designed to support families seeking purposeful, reflective, and values-centred learning at home. It continues the steady progression established in earlier terms, offering clear structure while allowing flexibility in pacing, resources, and delivery to suit each household.
Term 3 centres on legacy and leadership, guiding children to understand that true leadership is built through character, responsibility, and principled choices rather than popularity or power. Children are encouraged to reflect on how individuals influence others through knowledge, service, justice, and ethical decision-making and how leadership leaves a lasting impact on people and societies.
Learning is grounded in an Islamic worldview, shaping how children approach knowledge, responsibility, justice, gratitude, and accountability. Qur’an and authentic Islamic principles provide the foundation for reflection, supported by age-appropriate texts and resources that may be adapted according to availability. Lessons are designed to foster independence, allowing children to complete learning tasks independently where appropriate, while still encouraging meaningful discussion and reflection with parents.
This is a complete, term-long learning program, not a worksheet pack or scripted curriculum. It supports parents in planning, delivering, assessing and recordkeeping across the term, while maintaining a calm pace that prioritises understanding, character development, and steady growth rather than content overload.
Learning is planned with reference to the Australian Curriculum (ACARA) Year 5 outcomes, integrating key learning areas in a balanced and cohesive way. This ensures the program remains academically sound and adaptable for families both within Australia and internationally.
Across the term, children engage in rich and purposeful learning experiences.
English (Informative Writing & Comprehension)
In Term 3, English focuses on informative and explanatory writing through biographies, explanations, recounts, and comparative responses. Students develop comprehension by analysing how a person’s character, choices, and values shape their legacy and leadership. Writing tasks emphasise clear structure, sequencing of ideas, evidence from texts, and appropriate tone for audience and purpose. Oral language and speeches focus on communicating information clearly and thoughtfully rather than persuasion.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, learning strengthens number sense and problem-solving through fractions, multiplication, division, geometry, and time. Children compare and order fractions, apply written strategies to larger numbers, solve multi-step real-world problems, and use estimation to check reasonableness. Geometry and measurement build spatial awareness, accuracy, and application in everyday contexts.
Humanities (HASS/HSIE) - History & Civics
Humanities (HASS) learning explores how leadership, knowledge, trade, and decision-making shape societies over time. Children examine historical records with an understanding of reliability and bias, explore how inventions and discoveries influence daily life, and reflect on patterns of leadership, justice, responsibility, and the consequences of ethical or unethical use of power.
Science
In Science, children develop inquiry skills through fair testing, observation, and evidence-based conclusions. Learning explores forces, motion, light, sound, materials, and structures through hands-on investigations and design challenges that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
Personal Development and Wellbeing (PDH)
PDH focuses on self-leadership, emotional regulation, respectful communication, protective behaviours, and values-based decision-making. Children build routines that support physical and emotional wellbeing while reflecting on responsibility, gratitude and positive contribution.
Creative Arts
Learning develops both technical skill and expression through visual art, design, and integrated movement. Children explore symbolism, composition, tone, texture, typography, pattern, perspective, and visual communication. Dance, drama, music, and media are naturally integrated, with optional extensions such as calligraphy and printmaking.
This program is designed to be used flexibly, one day at a time, supporting families as they build meaningful routines and reflective learning moments. Optional activities and extensions allow families to adjust depth and focus while maintaining continuity and curriculum coverage.
