300 original practice questions, every one written from the published test plan for adult critical care nursing certification, with an explanation for every wrong answer as well as for the right one.

This is a question bank, not a textbook. It is built for the stage of study where the review course or the reading is done and what is left is finding out which answers are wrong, and why.

How the book is organised

  • A 21-question diagnostic that returns a study order rather than a score, weighted by the test plan, so a gap in the 21 percent Endocrine, Hematology/Immunology, GI, Renal/GU and Integumentary domain outranks a gap in the 12 percent Respiratory domain.
  • One chapter per test-plan domain: Cardiovascular; Respiratory; Endocrine, Hematology/Immunology, GI, Renal/GU, Integumentary; Musculoskeletal, Neurological, Behavioral/Psychosocial; Multisystem; Professional Caring and Ethical Practice. The diagnostic and both practice exams are drawn at the published weights.
  • Questions in sets of ten, with the answers starting on a later page, so reading ahead by accident is not possible.
  • Two timed practice exams of 120 questions each, mixed in the test plan's proportions and paced to the real exam's 180 minutes for 150 questions (125 scored, 25 unscored).
  • A 40-item second-best-answer drill, a misconception index, a test-plan cross-reference and a glossary.

What is different about the explanations

Most prep books explain the correct answer and leave the other three alone. Every explanation here does four things: why the key is right; why each wrong option was tempting, naming the misconception behind it; the detail in the question that rules that option out; and the one line that separates the key from the next-best option. On a critical care exam the miss is rarely ignorance. It is the right intervention at the wrong moment, or a number corrected before its cause.

Written to the published test plan

Every question traces to a condition or nurse characteristic in the published adult test plan, including the 20 percent of the exam on professional caring and ethical practice. The explanations draw on public sources: the exam handbook's test plan, the Synergy Model for Patient Care and the practice alerts published by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the OpenStax nursing textbooks, published clinical guidelines on sepsis, ARDS, aortic disease, hyperglycemic crises, acute kidney injury, brain death and other topics, and the federal hospital Conditions of Participation. No question is taken from, or modelled on, any real exam question. The diagnostic, the two practice exams and the drill draw on the same bank, so 300 is the number of distinct questions in the book rather than a count of repeats.

Which exam this book is for

It is written to the adult test plan that applies to exams taken on and after 12 November 2025. It does not cover the pediatric or neonatal exams. Drug doses and protocols differ between hospitals: at work, follow your unit's protocols and the prescriber's orders.

No book can promise a result. This one shows which answers are wrong, and what the wrong answer was built out of, before the exam asks.

This book is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by AACN Certification Corporation or the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. CCRN is a registered service mark of AACN Certification Corporation and is used here only to identify the exam.
