On Flourishing, Overgrowth, and Faithful Pruning

The danger was never simply that it grew.

The danger was that it looked like growth.

Kudzu begins along the green-covered hillsides of Appalachia, where a vine once introduced for useful purposes gradually became something else entirely. Beneath all that vigorous growth, the trees are still there. The fences are still there. The landscape has not disappeared.

It has simply been covered.

And sometimes a life can begin to look much the same.

Responsibilities genuinely need our attention. Opportunities are worth pursuing. Someone asks for help, so we say yes. Work matters. Service matters. Commitments often enter our lives for very good reasons.

One reasonable yes at a time, a life can become remarkably full.

But full and fruitful are not always the same thing.

Centered on John 15:1–5 and Hebrews 12:1, Kudzu explores the difference between genuine fruitfulness and simple accumulation. Jesus describes fruit as the result of abiding in Him—not carrying more, reaching farther, or proving how much we can manage. Hebrews adds another important distinction: something does not have to be sinful to become a weight that hinders the particular race God has given us to run.

Together, participants will consider what is genuinely bearing fruit, what may have quietly accumulated, and what important things have become harder to see beneath everything growing around them. They will explore why good things can be particularly difficult to question, how to distinguish a responsibility God has given us to carry from a weight that may need to be laid aside, and what faithful pruning actually requires.

This Gathering is not an invitation to label every crowded season unhealthy or every difficult responsibility something to eliminate. Nor is pruning simply an exercise in making life easier or more efficient. Instead, Kudzu invites us to begin where Jesus does:

Abide.

From there, we can look beneath what has accumulated, protect what is genuinely bearing fruit, and prayerfully consider what may need to be rearranged, delegated, released—or simply brought back into its proper place.

The Host Guide provides gentle direction without requiring you to become a teacher. The discussion questions are designed to encourage thoughtful conversation rather than search for a single “right” answer.
