The ring was there.

And then it wasn’t.

No explanation. No satisfying ending. Just an empty place where something valuable had been—and a question that could never quite be answered.

The Fire Opal begins with a beautiful ring lost in a garden during an ordinary summer responsibility. The rows were searched. The weeds were sifted. Other people joined the search.

Eventually, there was nothing more to do.

The ring was never found.

Centered on Matthew 10:29–31 and Psalm 139:1–12, The Fire Opal considers what Scripture gives us when something remains genuinely lost, unanswered, or beyond our ability to resolve. Jesus does not say that the sparrow never falls. He tells us that its fall is not beyond the Father's knowledge. And Psalm 139 describes a God for whom neither distance nor darkness creates a place beyond His sight.

Together, participants will consider why loss can feel especially disorienting when it occurs while we are doing what is responsible or faithful, why an object's significance can reach far beyond its monetary value, and what compassionate presence looks like when another person's loss cannot be repaired.

The Gathering also asks us to consider the difference between faithful searching and the inability to stop searching; between responsibility and ongoing self-accusation; and between trusting that God knows an unresolved situation and expecting Him to explain it to us.

There comes a point when searching ends and trust begins.

Not because the loss no longer matters.

Not because every question has been answered.

And not because faith guarantees that everything lost will eventually be restored to our hands.

But because what is beyond our knowledge has never been beyond His.

Lost to me. Seen by God.

A Hearthside Gathering can be used with a church group, women’s ministry, small group, Sunday school class, book-club-style gathering, a few friends around a kitchen table, or simply on your own.

The Host Guide provides gentle direction without requiring you to become a teacher. The discussion questions are designed to encourage thoughtful conversation rather than search for a single “right” answer.

And if gathering a group isn’t practical right now, the Participant Packet can also be worked through individually as a personal study and reflection.
