This design came about from what I call a yarn doodle when I just started knitting and played around with some simple colour work. The drifting squares name comes from the fact you are knitting small squares of colour which are off set on each repeat creating a drift.


Difficulty

 

Knitted in the round these can be either knitted on double pointed needles using knit and purl stitches with decreases, colour changing yarn and a Kitchener stitch to finish the toe.

 

Yarn and Notions

 

4ply (fingering) weight sock yarn in two contrasting colours, total amount will depend on length of sock. For example a medium circumference UK size 7 pair of socks used 65g/260m/285 yards Yarn A and 25g/100m/110 yards Yarn B

 

2.25mm (US 1) double pointed needles or small circular needle

 

Two stitch markers (optional)

 

Needle to complete Kitchener stitch/ends

 

Measurements

 

Small – 7.5 inches – 56 stitches

Medium – 8.5 inches – 64 stitches

Large – 9.5 inches – 72 stitches
