There’s something magical about bamboo, how fast it grows, how each stalk sounds different when you tap on it. I had the opportunity in July of 2012 to enjoy a stroll through Japan’s most iconic bamboo forest, located in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto near Tenryuji Temple. The heat was punishing at 34°C but here in the bamboo forest it was cool and comfortable. I wanted to capture that comforting feeling of cooling shade and shelter in this piece, painted with Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints. For that person who visited Kyoto and left a piece of their heart there, or the lover of all things Japanese. Just right for that place in your home where you sit and relax with your favorite cool beverage.
