Ye Xian

Ye Xian (also spelled Yeh-Shen) is a celebrated 9th-century Chinese fairytale from the Tang Dynasty, widely recognized as one of the oldest recorded variants of the Cinderella story.

The story follows Ye Xian, an intelligent, hardworking, and gentle young woman raised by a jealous stepmother and stepsister after her father passes away. Deprived of warmth and affection, Ye Xian forms a loving friendship with a beautiful fish in a nearby pond. Envious of her only comfort, the stepmother tricks and slaughters the fish for dinner. Devastated, Ye Xian discovers from an old man that the fish's bones possess magical powers to grant her wishes.
