Homestead Buttoned Cowl Knitting Pattern

The design of the lovely and easy-to-wear Homestead Buttoned Cowl was inspired by the history of Eagle Bend Alpaca Farm in Burlington, Kentucky. Established in 1830, the farm has a rich history that includes a chance encounter with Daniel Boone.

The bricks used to build the home were made nearby, and it took 3 years for the home to be completed. All these years later, it still stands on the property as a landmark that is registered on the national, state, and county registries of historic homes.

The home was nicknamed ”The Brick” by the Conner family, and to honor their historic homestead, the center panel of the cowl features a lace stitch that echoes brickwork. Adorning the lace center panel on both sides is a cable stitch reminiscent of the shape of the farm’s uniquely shaped signs.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS:
US 6/4 mm needles for working flat
US 7/4.5 mm needles for working flat
Buttons, 4, 3/4” (19 mm)
Cable needle
Darning needle
Sewing needle & thread
Stitch markers, 4

GAUGE:
The 16 sts x 12 rows of the center lace panel = 3.625”/9.2 cm wide x 1.875”/4.75 cm long after blocking using US 7/4.5 mm needles, worked flat in the Cables and Lace stitch.

Note: Blocking your swatch is important. Alpaca yarn tends to grow with blocking and wear!
