Why the Church?
Why does Christ gather us?
This is the first paper of a Scripture Opened trilogy on the Church Christ built, opening the Gospel scenes in which Christ speaks not to isolated individuals but to a people gathered around Himself: a Rock named, keys given, a Body formed that will outlast its founder's earthly life.
The paper asks why salvation, from the beginning, has never been a private transaction between the soul and God alone, but has always involved being gathered into something: a people, a family, a Church. It traces this pattern from the call of Israel through to the promise Christ makes at Caesarea Philippi.
