The Fall of Babylon and the True Morning Star.

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, who didst rise in the morning?" This paper opens Isaias 14:12 slowly, tracing the verse back to its original setting: a taunt-song against the king of Babylon, not a name for the devil.

The paper asks how a title for a pagan king came to be read, across centuries of tradition, as a description of the fall of Satan, and what stays true in that reading even once the original context is restored. Lucifer, the Morning Star, is set against the true Morning Star, Christ, who alone rises and does not fall.
