LEARN TO SEW - Saturday or Sunday workshop 10am-4:30pm

The "learn to sew" workshop is the ultimate introduction to sewing for beginners. Whether you've never even been near a sewing machine, or you haven't used one for years, we'll start from the complete basics and have you sewing your very first project by the afternoon.

This workshop will teach you the very basics, from setting up a sewing machine, through to sewing your first seams and plenty more. We'll start with the basics in the morning, then we'll have a lunch break to take it all in and reset our focus, then in the afternoon we'll move onto sewing your very own tote bag to take home, learning a few techniques as we go. Not just a simple tote bag either, this will be a fully lined tote bag complete with front and back pockets!

With a maximum of 5 students per class, this is a small group setting and is perfect for learning your first stitches. The studio is only small, so we keep the numbers low to keep it from feeling too cramped.

You'll have a full 5 hours of uninterrupted sewing time, with all equipment provided. There will also be a half hour break for lunch. Some tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring your own lunch. There's not many places nearby to head too unless you have a car!

DATE, TIME AND LOCATION

Various dates and times available.

The workshop will take place in our container studio on Pollard Yard. The Yard is easily accessible via car or tram, with the closest tram stop being Holt Town and the yard only being a 5 minute walk from here. Parking is available but extremely limited so we would advise public transport where possible.

WHAT WILL THIS CLASS COVER?

Morning:

  • What you need to know about your machine to get started
  • How to thread a sewing machine
  • Winding a bobbin
  • Sewing a straight stitch and zig zag stitche
  • Stitch lengths
  • Sewing your first seam
  • Finishing your first seam
  • Sewing curves and corners.

Afternoon:

  • The afternoon will be focused on sewing your first project. You will be guided through every step and can use these skills to start sewing other projects on your own!
  • Tote bags are often used as a beginners project because they use some of the simple skills we will have learned in the morning. Once you've done a simple project like this, it will give you the confidence to start working with simple patterns and making your own projects at home!

CLASS INCLUDES:

  • No need to bring a machine! Use of our machines is included in this class. Most machines work in a similar way and so you should find the skills transferrable across models. That being said, if you want to use your own machine, please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
  • All tools and equipment

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

  • Just yourself! We would suggest bringing a bottle of water, your lunch and anything else you may need over the course of the day.

ACCESSIBILITY?

The container studio has ground level access and there are no stairs. There is a step up into the container though, so please bare this in mind. We have public toilets accessible on site, again at ground level. These do also have a step up to enter.

Fantastic experience

The day went by very fast. Tash showed us all the parts of a sewing machine, how to do the bobbin, how to thread it, use the most common stitches and the button hole along with a million more things. No questions where to many. We used everything learnt on building a tote bag with a pockets and straps, which was very easy following her instructions. I wanted to try to see if sewing was something I could enjoy and I am already looking for a sewing machine to continue what we learnt! Thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone that want to get familiar with the basics. 10/10.

Excellent class

The class was excellent and well paced for beginners. By the end of the day I felt that I had learned a lot and came away with a useful bag to use for a variety of purposes.

Excellent, well paced explanation about the workings of an electric sewing machine, practical experience of preparing a bobbin and threading the machine.
