Most hard moments give a warning first, and the warning is usually quiet: a hood going up, a talker who stops talking, a third trip to the bathroom. This handout puts those signs in English and Spanish side by side, so the para, the teacher, and a Spanish speaking family can look at the same page and use the same words.

What's included:

• Cool, Warm, and Hot charts in English and Spanish, side by side: body, face, voice, words, work, and with others

• The quiet ones / Los niños callados: kids who heat up without any noise, including shutdowns and freezing

• Signs adults misread, plus a short "check yourself" section on the adult's own early signs

• A fill in page for one child's earliest signs and what helps, with bilingual headings

• Home and school note slips, so families and staff can tell each other what they saw

How I'd use it:

I'd hand this out at the start of the year to paras and to families who read Spanish, then fill in the last pages together at a conference. The note slips are the part that gets used all year. A family writes "he didn't sleep, he's been quiet all morning," and the teacher knows before 9:00.

Every chart is two columns, English on the left and Spanish on the right, so nobody needs a second copy. The Cool, Warm, Hot words match the rest of my calm resources, which means a family and a school team can talk about the same thing in the same terms. The quiet ones page matters most. A frozen child is not a calm child, and families often see that side first.

Who it's for: Teachers, paras, and families. Any grade level.
