Bubble wrap

Bubblewrap. Everybody likes to pop it, right? In fact, studies show that popping bubblewrap causes people to feel calmer and more alert. 

This shawl got the name Bubble wrap because, well, it has bubbles. And like it's namesake, they are the kind of bubbles you just want to pop, pop, pop.

Knit from end to end, this shawl starts with just a few cast on stitches. It increases gradually to the middle of the shawl and then decreases again to the other side, meaning that it is easy to customise depending on the size you want and the amount of yarn you have. The body of the shawl is knit in relaxing garter stitch, while the wide border along one side, with it's brioche and cables, will keep you entertained. And if some of the brioche stitches are unfamiliar, don't worry, I've made tutorial videos.

One last interesting fact: did you know that bubblewrap (the packing material, not the shawl) was originally designed to be wallpaper?

Materials:

• Two colours of fingering or sport weight yarn, approximately 420m (460yds) of the main colour (MC) and 380m (416yds) of the contrast colour (CC).

• 3.5mm/US 4 circular needle with an 40cm/32” or longer cable.

• Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Size of finished shawl:

Length 220cm/86.5", depth 45cm/18", relaxed after blocking.

Gauge:

Obtaining gauge is not essential, as long as you are happy with the fabric you are getting. Different gauge will affect the size of the finished object and the amount of yarn used.

The sample shawl had a gauge of 21 stitches and 38 rows of garter stitch in a 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4” square, after blocking.
