UK Edition: Bus and Train Timetables, Fares and Railcards, SEND, KS4 and Post-16
A travel training set for KS4 and post 16 SEND learners, built on UK timetables: a Route 7 bus timetable both ways, a train timetable with peak and off peak trains, and a fares board with singles, day and weekly tickets and a 16 to 25 Railcard fare. All times use the 24 hour clock.
Why I made this
Travel training is one of the biggest steps towards independence, and the timetable is where a lot of young people give up. UK timetables list stops down the side and times across, and hide the useful bits in the small print. This set teaches learners to read one bus route, one train line and one fares board, then plan a real trip to a work trial.
What's included
• Teacher page with notes on railcards, bus passes and where to check local fares
• Words to know: 10 key words with pictures (timetable, 24 hour clock, stop, route, single, return, day ticket, off peak, railcard, platform)
• 3 practice documents: bus timetable (both directions), train timetable, fares board
• 12 Level A questions with pictures and three choices
• The same 12 questions at Level B, with open answers and room to show working
• A real life task: plan the buses to and from a work trial, choose the cheaper ticket, and say what to do if the bus does not come
• Answer key that shows where to find every answer
Two levels, same questions
Level A suits learners who need visual support and choices. Level B suits learners ready to write and show working. Because the questions match, the whole group can use the same timetables.
How I use it
Teach "latest bus that still gets me there on time" as its own skill, because it is the question learners get wrong most. After the worksheet, swap in your own local timetable and repeat the real life task for a real trip your learners make. It sits well alongside travel training records and is useful evidence towards a community inclusion or employment outcome in an EHCP.
Who it is for
KS4, sixth form, FE college and post 16 SEND groups, learners on SEN Support, and supported internship and independent travel programmes.
Please note
All routes, times and fares are made up. Railcard and bus pass rules change, so check the current rules before a real trip.
