English paper-piecing has experienced a recent revival as more and more people have become aware of the joy and benefits of slow stitching. This pattern features my favourite technique, curved EPP which with help from a glue pen and the flat back stitch, makes this a really enjoyable project.

This digital pattern includes a template sheet to use to make your own EPP papers, or you can purchase packs of precision-cut papers at Sewmotion.com here.

In these easy-to-follow instructions, I show you how to glue-baste your shapes using the paper templates included, before sewing them together using a 'flat whip stitch'. I then explain how to appliqué your ring onto the background fabric, add borders and then how to finish your cushion with some gorgeous big-stitch hand quilting.

Skill level: Intermediate

Finished size: Approx. 18" square

You will need;

• Either five 4½” x 6” strips or ten 4½” x 4” strips in co-ordinating prints

• One 3” x 22” strip in a contrasting blender

• One 15½” square in background fabric

• Two 2½” x WOF (width of fabric) border strips

• Two 2½” x WOF binding strips

• Embroidery floss

• A set of pre-cut EPP papers - packs are available at here at sewmotion.com, or you can make your own using

the templates on the last page. As the curved guideline on the Teardrop shape is important during the

piecing, I strongly suggest purchasing a pack of pre-cut papers.

• A temporary glue pen, such as Stix2

Optional - you can purchase a set of acrylic templates for this project on the website, not only does it help with precise multiple cutting, it makes fussy-cutting a dream

• Thread for piecing – a neutral colour such

as light grey or you could colour-match the fabric used for the Teardrops.

• Gentle fabric starch

• 20” square of wadding, and if hand quilting, I suggest backing your panel with a fine fabric such as a

20” square of butter muslin before you quilt

• 50cm x WOF of cushion backing and a 20” cushion pad

• 10” embroidery hoop if hand quilting

• Basic sewing kit including pins, fabric scissors, a Sharps needle for piecing, an embroidery needle if

hand quilting and a sewing machine with a quarter-inch foot, (and a walking foot if machine quilting).

Make sure to read the whole pattern all the way through before beginning your project.
