This cardigan is a rather roomy, plushy cocoon that will envelope you in the cold nights at home. It has been created with comfort in mind: a soft, very warm garment that is easy to wear around the house and decent enough to just pull on if you need to go out and pick the mail or go to the market. Not an elegant piece that you may want to wear at the office or when you go to a party, and yet not even something that you may prefer not to be seen in if the mailman rings (twice?) with your favorite yarn delivery.
The cardigan is knitted top down with raglan sleeves. All of the cardigan is knitted flat, including the sleeves (that will have to be seamed on the underside). This way you will be able to knit in the right gauge throughout the cardigan with no need to swatch twice; you may even use (long) single point needles instead of circulars. The body is rather short, add one or two repetitions of the stitch pattern if you wish for a longer body, making sure you adapt the buttonband as well (as you knit the band you will have to place the two markers farther away from the start of the row and either add one extra button or place the buttons more widely spaced). I have provided two collar options for this cardigan: a simple band and a shawl collar worked in short rows. Pick your favorite. The yarn I used for this easy piece comes from a sale: it was a cone with no band or label attached. I just liked the fluffy feel, color, and composition (100% merino) of it. You can use whatever Aran weight yarn that gives you the appropriate gauge, as the cardigan is fully knitted in stockinette stitch and easy knit-and-purl stitches. I made my best to provide a few commercial yarn options that are widely available (in Europe or the US) and within different price ranges, sticking to natural fibers as much as I could. Yet, feel free to use whatever yarn you have on hand, as long as it produces the right gauge. Also, yarn amounts are very eyeballed. As this is a top down cardigan you can easily adapt the length of the body to the amount of yarn you have. Just make sure that, as you bind off the body, you are left with 50-70 grams of yarn for the simple neckband, or with 70-100 grams of yarn for the shawl collar.
Questo cardigan è un bozzolo spazioso e confortevole che vi avvolgerà nelle fredde serate a casa. L’idea di comfort ha guidato la sua creazione: un capo molto morbido e comodo da indossare a casa ma anche abbastanza piacevole da indossare al volo per scendere a prendere la posta o per fare la spesa. Non è un capo elegante da essere indossato in ufficio o per andare a una festa, ma non è nemmeno il genere di cosa in cui non vorreste farvi vedere dal postino quando vi citofona per farvi ritirare quel pacchetto di lana che avete ordinato. Il cardigan si lavora top down con maniche raglan. È lavorato interamente in piano, comprese le maniche (che dovranno essere cucite nella parte inferiore). In questa maniera avrete modo di lavorare tutto il cardigan nella giusta tensione senza dover fare due campioni; potreste perfino usare i ferri dritti (quelli lunghi 60 cm però!) al posto del circolare. Il busto è piuttosto corto, potete aggiungere una o due ripetizioni del motivo per renderlo più lungo, non scordatevi di adattare anche la bottoniera (nel lavorarla dovrete posizionare i due marcapunti più lontano dall’inizio del ferro e, a piacere, aggiungere un bottone o spaziare maggiormente i bottoni). Nel modello sono presenti due opzioni per il collo del cardigan: semplice o sciallato e lavorato a ferri accorciati. Scegliete il collo che preferite. Il filato che ho usato per questo capo viene da uno stocchista: si trattava di un semplice cono senza etichetta. Mi sono piaciuti immediatamente la sua mano soffice, il colore e la composizione (100% merino).
