RMS Level 3 Spelling and Writing Course
A fully sequential reading, spelling and writing programme for older pupils, including those with special educational needs. A year-long curriculum.
Science of Reading aligned.
Level 3 builds carefully on the foundations established in Levels 1 and 2. Children begin by revisiting familiar sounds and vocabulary, giving them a confident start, before gradually extending their knowledge of new sounds and spelling patterns.
But Level 3 is more than a spelling programme — it is also a writing programme.
As children develop their spelling and reading skills, they are encouraged to put their own thoughts onto paper. Carefully structured writing exercises help them build better sentences, while “Be the Teacher” proofreading activities develop the important habit of checking and editing their own work.
A simple, structured approach
The programme is divided into 35 incremental lessons, designed to provide approximately one lesson per week.
Each lesson includes:
- Clear teaching instructions in the Teaching Manual
- A word list for the sounds and spelling patterns being taught
- A double-sided worksheet providing structured practice and review
- Reading passages using only sounds introduced so far
- Weekly dictation using words already taught
- Writing exercises to encourage children to develop their ideas
- Proofreading and editing activities
- Regular review to help children retain what they have learned
The reading passages provide valuable additional reading practice alongside the spelling work. Because the vocabulary is carefully controlled, children can practise reading new sounds in print without being overwhelmed by unfamiliar phonics patterns.
Designed to make teaching easier
There is no need to learn complicated phonics terminology. The Teaching Manual gives clear instructions for every lesson, so you can simply open the book and teach.
The incremental structure means that new learning is introduced in manageable steps, while constant review gives children repeated opportunities to practise and consolidate their skills.
The worksheets are deliberately non-babyish, making them suitable for older struggling readers and writers as well as younger pupils working at this level. They can also be used with adult learners and pupils learning English as an additional or foreign language.
35 weeks of structured learning
Level 3 progresses through vowel sounds, vowel teams, silent letters and more advanced spelling patterns, including:
a, o, i, u, e → ck → oo → ee → ai → ea → ar → or → a-e → i-e → o-e → u-e → ir → oa → long vowels → silent letters → are → ear → oi → er → al → au → aw → ur → sion/ssion
The aim is not simply to teach children to spell individual words, but to help them integrate their phonics knowledge into reading and everyday writing.
