MODULE 3 RECOVER CONTROL EFFORTLESSLY
Module 3, "Effortlessly Regain Control," focuses on emotional regulation through the body. The main idea is that your body can calm your mind, not the other way around. We are often taught to "think differently to feel better," but this doesn't work when the nervous system is on alert.
The module explains that when you feel anxious, your mind races, but your rational part (the prefrontal cortex) partially shuts down. Instead of trying to "think your way out" of stress, the module teaches you how to use movement to achieve this through somatic regulation.
Module 3 Content and Tools
- Your Brain Map: Identify the moments when your body activates before your mind, the thoughts that arise in those situations, and the physical sensations you experience, such as rapid heart rate or muscle tension.
- The Somatic Tool: The module presents "The 120-Second Reset," an exercise that activates the calming system through simple movements. The exercise consists of stretching your arms upward as you inhale, saying "Up!", forcefully lowering your arms as you exhale, and saying "Down!" to release tension.
- Why It Works: The neuroscience behind this exercise is that movement activates the motor system, speech creates an auditory anchor, and deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve, which helps calm the amygdala and reduce stress in seconds.
The module also includes variations of the exercise to practice in public, at home, or in bed. With consistent practice, the goal is to create a habit that allows you to regain control effortlessly, as "repetition creates habit, and habit creates calm."
