When someone believes they "got away with something" their conscience might kick in and they feel the need to punish themselves. This sometimes gets extreme and confuses the person. They cannot handle doing something wrong with impunity and they attempt to make it right. The ego protests when it gets away with something and the person is trying to make it right.

Not uncommon at all.
