[SPH] M1 Carbine & M2 Carbine
The M1 Carbine and M2 Carbine are lightweight, semi-automatic (and select-fire, respectively) rifles developed by the United States during World War II to provide support troops, paratroopers, and officers with a more compact and maneuverable firearm than the standard M1 Garand.
The M1 Carbine was introduced in 1941 and chambered in .30 Carbine (7.62×33mm), a cartridge more powerful than a pistol round but lighter and less powerful than full rifle rounds. It used a short-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, and was fed from a 15-round detachable box magazine, later extended to 30 rounds. Lightweight, with low recoil and decent accuracy, it was widely used in World War II, Korea, and even early in the Vietnam War.
The M2 Carbine, developed near the end of World War II, was a select-fire version of the M1, capable of both semi-automatic and fully automatic fire, with a cyclic rate of about 750–850 rounds per minute. It was typically issued with 30-round magazines to take advantage of its increased firepower. Though it looked nearly identical to the M1, it included minor mechanical changes, such as a selector switch and a modified bolt and trigger group.
