Fallschirmjägergewehr 42 (FG 42)

The FG 42 (Fallschirmjägergewehr 42) is a German battle rifle developed during World War II specifically for the Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers). Designed by Louis Stange at Rheinmetall, it was intended to give airborne troops a lightweight, powerful weapon that could function as both a rifle and a light machine gun.

Chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser, the FG 42 uses a gas-operated, rotating bolt system and fires from a closed bolt. It is fed from a 20-round detachable box magazine mounted on the left side and has a cyclic rate of fire of 750 rounds per minute. This version (also known as the Type 2, late-war or “G” model) featured a more stamped-metal construction, a revised wooden or plastic stock, and other production simplifications compared to the earlier Type 1.

Although only produced in relatively small numbers, the FG 42 is regarded as one of the most advanced and innovative infantry weapons of the war, combining high firepower, controllability, and a compact design suited for airborne operations.
