MP-41(r)
The MP-41(r) is a German conversion of the Soviet PPSh-41 submachine gun, created during World War II by reworking captured examples to fire German ammunition. The “(r)” designation indicated a weapon of Russian origin that had been modified for Wehrmacht use.
Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, the MP-41(r) retained the original blowback-operated, open-bolt action of the PPSh-41 but featured a modified barrel and magazine well to accept standard MP 40 stick magazines. The cyclic rate was reduced to approximately 750 rounds per minute. Many conversions kept the distinctive perforated barrel shroud and wooden stock of the PPSh-41.
These converted weapons were issued primarily on the Eastern Front, where captured Soviet arms were abundant. While not produced in large numbers as a standardized design, the MP-41(r) provided German forces with a familiar, high-volume-of-fire submachine gun that used readily available 9mm ammunition and magazines.
