INFORMATION
In late 1965, Boeing Vertol produced four armed/armored ACH-47A Chinook helicopters. These four aircraft were first deployed to Vietnam as part of the 53rd Aviation Detachment for a six-month TDY test period. Following the test period, the unit was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division's 228th Assault Support Helicopter Battalion and renamed the 1st Aviation Detachment (Provisional). Only one of the original four gunships remained in the air by February 1968.
