Like waves lapping up onto the beach and then receding, curved garter stitch ridges create a simple but effective design element. The graceful curves are achieved with short rows. These blankets knit up quickly in a soft and chunky washable merino wool. The pattern is offered in three different sizes including baby blanket, lap blanket, and throw.

Simple construction with just knit and purl stitches. This is a great beginner project for learning short rows.

This knitting pattern includes written directions and a complete photo tutorial for knitting Japanese short rows.

Substitution Notes

Choose a smooth, bulky weight yarn. Two strands of a worsted weight yarn may also be used to achieve the bulky gauge.

If part of what you like about the design is the short stretches of colour (about 8-10 sts before changing to another colour) and you hold two strands of worsted together, you’ll need to open up the skeins and observe how they were dyed. If you can identify a repeat that’s the same for every loop around the skein, then when holding two strands together from two separate skeins, try to match up that colour repeat.
