The Old Gate | A Hearthside Study

A 12-page individual Bible study about family memory, inherited faithfulness, and resurrection hope in Christ.

The gate that once marked the place of the dead now greets the living.

It still invites people to come through.

The Old Gate begins with a small family cemetery on the hill above my house and its weathered gate, found years later in the basement. Cleaned and placed beside the roadside stand, it now holds a sign welcoming strangers. From that changed purpose comes a deeper question—how can we carry forward what we have received while allowing it to serve the lives being lived now?

Rooted in John 11:25–26 and Hebrews 12:1–2, this Hearthside Study considers Jesus’ declaration that He is the resurrection and the life, the encouragement of faithful witnesses, and the call to keep our eyes fixed on Him. It explores what memory can preserve, how inheritance becomes present faithfulness, and how resurrection hope makes room for honest grief.

Inside the 12-page designed PDF, you’ll find the original The Old Gate essay, Scripture readings and context, eight guided study and reflection questions, personal reflection prompts, a closing prayer and application, and space for notes. The study can be worked through quietly on your own or shared informally with others around a table.
