Vital Adaptation Professional Practice Framework™

Version 1.0 — Founding Edition

A coherent structure for thoughtful, occupation-centred professional practice

Occupational therapists draw on extensive knowledge, values, evidence and experience—but it is not always easy to bring these elements together into a clear and consistent approach.

The Vital Adaptation® Professional Practice Framework™ provides an integrated structure for thinking about, explaining and developing professional practice. It helps individual occupational therapists connect professional identity, ethics, occupation-centred thinking and clinical reasoning with assessment, goal setting, intervention and evaluation.

Rather than prescribing a single clinical method, the Framework supports practitioners to examine how the different elements of good occupational therapy practice fit together.

Who is it for?

The Framework may be particularly useful if you are:

  • an occupational therapist seeking a clearer structure for your professional reasoning;
  • working independently or developing a portfolio practice;
  • reviewing your professional identity, scope or approach;
  • looking for a framework that keeps occupation and participation visible throughout practice;
  • undertaking reflection, supervision or continuing professional development;
  • seeking a more coherent way to connect assessment, analysis, intervention and outcomes.

It is suitable for individual UK occupational therapists across a range of practice settings.

What problem does it address?

Professional practice can become fragmented. Ethics may be considered separately from reasoning, assessment separately from occupation, and intervention separately from evaluation.

The Framework helps you move from a collection of professional activities towards a more connected understanding of:

  • who you are practising as;
  • the values and responsibilities informing your work;
  • how occupation and participation remain central;
  • how you gather and interpret information;
  • how you make and explain professional judgements;
  • how goals, interventions and outcomes connect;
  • how you review the quality and impact of your practice.

What does the Framework cover?

The Founding Edition includes foundations and principles alongside 12 interconnected areas of professional practice:

  1. Professional identity
  2. Ethics
  3. Occupation-centred practice
  4. Professional judgement
  5. Communication
  6. Assessment
  7. Analysis
  8. Goal setting
  9. Intervention planning
  10. Intervention
  11. Evaluation
  12. Outcomes

What will you have after using it?

Depending on how you use the Framework, it can help you develop:

  • a clearer account of your professional approach;
  • stronger connections between occupation, reasoning and action;
  • prompts for reflection, supervision and CPD;
  • a structure for identifying strengths and development needs;
  • a more coherent way to explain and evidence your practice.

You can read the Framework as a whole or return to individual sections when a particular professional question arises.

Important professional boundary

The Framework is a professional-development resource. It does not replace individual professional judgement, supervision, employer procedures, regulatory requirements, specialist guidance or legal advice.
