Supporting Clients in Family Mediation

Learn more about the mediation process and how to effectively support your clients in the family mediation process.

Being part of the process

This course was written to help family lawyers (and other family practitioners such as divorce coaches) who are supporting clients in mediation. It aims to explain more about the mediation process and what's involved, suggest ways to ensure you become a part of this process AND how to deal with tricky scenarios such as your client's panicked phone call that they think they should stop mediation.

Key changes

One of the things I see as a mediator is clients who are reluctant to go back to their lawyers during the process - even where it would be helpful to do so.

It also puts you in an impossible position when your client come back to you with a Memorandum of Understanding and you can see problems with it. The client wants to move on, and to go with the agreement they think works, but you want to (rightly) protect their interests.

There are ways to avoid both these scenarios and to better support your clients in mediation. It's a rewarding way of working for both you and your clients so getting it right can be key to your own sense of wellbeing and work satisfaction and a wealth of recommendations from clients.
