A knit-flat and seamed version of my popular gaugeless hat *

Grab yarn from stash, grab any needles to hand and sit down to knit without having to gauge swatch or worry about matching someone else’s gauge.

Any weight of yarn can be used and any size hat can be created from this pattern. Standard sizes are included for reference or work to your own measurements for a custom fit. This makes this pattern ideal for yarns like handspun that can be difficult to fit to gauge or for holding different weights of yarn together for a stash-busting hat.

Options are included for beanie or slouchy styles, with or without a turned back brim.

Pattern contains
written instructions for main pattern and crown increases and finishing. Standard sizing information.

Sizes:
Work from your own measurements or choose a standard size approx. 5-10cm (2-4 in) less than your actual head size for a snug fit. Be sure to measure from the top of your crown to the base of your ear to check required length and work additional rows if required.

Yarn and yardage
This pattern is ideal for creative combinations of different yarns or for yarns which are difficult to match to standard gauge patterns. My sample is in a slubby, thick and thin handspun yarn which equates to an aran weight when knit. I used approx. 65 grams for an adult small.

Yarn requirements will vary based on yarn weight, gauge and size. As a very rough guide – with the lower end being for the smallest size - allow:

110-400 m of very light yarn (lace/fingering)
90-230 m of medium yarn (sport/DK)
55- 170 m of heavy yarn (worsted/aran)
35-150 m of very heavy yarn (chunky/super chunky/jumbo)

Always allow extra yarn
