I’ve visited over a hundred public baths in my lifetime, more than eighty of them in Japan. And of all of them, this one in Onomichi, Hiroshima has the most soul. It’s a radium spring set out a ways in the countryside but it had a wonderful country charm, with a tatami room where you can crack open a bottle of ice cold milk and warm up your legs under a kotatsu after your bath. This particular spring comes out of the ground cold but is heated up by boilers that pump out smoke like the ones of the past. The rushing sound of the creek flowing right next to the outdoor bath and the singing of birds beyond the woven reed screens truly makes one feel connected to all nature. Who cannot find healing in such a place? This watercolor brush pen painting captures the essence of a Japanese outdoor bath, making you feel you’re about to dip a toe in the piping-hot water and ease yourself in to let your troubles melt away. This 4x6 postcard-sized painting will look perfect in a spa room, bathroom, on top of a desk – anywhere you need a visual space to relieve your stress.
