Randy Pausch: The Last Lecture — A Blueprint for a Meaningful Life

Walk in Their Skin | 26-Page Speech Study | Grades 9–12

History provides the evidence. Empathy guides the questions.

On September 18, 2007, Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch delivered Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams, a lecture about childhood dreams, obstacles, perseverance, relationships, and helping others achieve their goals.

But who was Randy Pausch before he delivered The Last Lecture?

This 26-page Walk in Their Skin study invites students to investigate the man behind the words—not simply the circumstances surrounding his terminal illness.

Through guided listening, research, visual interpretation, thoughtful reflection, and evidence-based writing, students explore what Pausch's life and lecture reveal about determination, leadership, empathy, dreams, and love.

The Hand You're Dealt — Words, Images & Interpretation

One of the study's signature activities uses 15 illustrated cards representing different ideas and experiences.

Students examine each illustration, develop their own metaphors or interpretations, and connect their ideas to evidence from Pausch's lecture.

There is no single predetermined answer.

Students are encouraged to think independently, explain their reasoning, and recognize that meaningful interpretations must be supported by evidence.

A Blueprint for a Meaningful Life

Pausch spoke about achieving childhood dreams. But what about the dreams we help make possible for others?

Students examine his professional accomplishments, his work with students, his relationships, and his influence on the people around him.

The study concludes with My Blueprint, an opportunity to reflect on the ideas that matter most to them and the lives they hope to influence.
