Kinkaku-ji: The Golden Pavilion
Kinkaku-ji: The Golden Pavilion
Kinkaku-ji, officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺), is one of Japan’s most iconic temples and a must-see in Kyoto. The glittering golden pavilion, reflected on a serene mirror pond, creates a surreal and breathtaking sight. Constructed in 1397 by shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as a retirement villa, it became a Zen temple after his death. Though destroyed in 1950 by arson, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1955, enhancing its gilded brilliance.
The surrounding Muromachi-period strolling garden offers picturesque views, while visitors can enjoy Matcha tea and Wagashi in the tranquil setting.
