Shōren-in: A Tranquil Imperial Temple
Shōren-in is one of Kyoto’s five Monzeki temples of the Tendai sect, historically led by imperial family members. Founded in the late Heian period, it is home to two exquisite Japanese gardens.
The main garden, featuring the pond Ryūjin no Ike, is attributed to Sōami from the Muromachi period, while the Kirishima no Niwa garden was designed by Kobori Enshū during the Edo period. Despite its popularity, Shōren-in maintains a peaceful atmosphere.
