This making plans and invitations task box teaches teens and young adults the words to invite a friend, say yes or no kindly, pick a time and place, confirm, and handle a canceled plan.

Why I made this: Every Friday for a month, one of students told a friend from his bowling team, "We should hang out sometime," and every week nothing came of it. He never named a day, a time, or a place. When he did, his friend said yes. This box teaches the words that turn "sometime" into a plan.

What’s included: Everything sits in one 21 page PDF, with an editable Word version:

• A teacher page with exact counts, a 2 week plan, and a note that a small circle of friends is okay

• Level A ●: 12 near errorless invite cards with 2 choices, in 16 point type

• Level B ■: 24 cards for inviting, saying yes or no, picking a time and place, and confirming

• Level C ▲: 24 twist cards for a reply you did not plan for, a "maybe" that is unclear, or a friend who feels left out

• A plan builder mat and a "plan words" reference page

• Three plan practice pages, an answer key that marks each twist, prompt level data with a 10 session graph, a try it for real page with a 5 item adult check, and blank cards

How to use it: Read the plan words page together and role play invites and kind no answers. Students work one level at a time with self check codes and the plan builder mat. Then make one real, small plan and confirm it.

Who it’s for: High school special education teachers, 18 to 21 program teachers, school counselors, and families of teens and young adults. It also works for grades 6 to 8.

Format: PDF, US Letter, 21 pages, plus an editable Word copy. Level markers use a word plus a shape, so it works in black and white.

How this is different: Each live box keeps to its own skill: the Asking for Help Task Box (asking for help), the Personal Space Task Box (greetings and distance), and the Talking at Work Task Box (talk on the job). The Job Skills Communication scripts cover texting a boss, and the Repair Conversation Cards cover adult repair talks. Nothing here plans a work shift or the outing itself.
