This year’s LYS Day pattern is a long rectangular shawl that will keep you engaged as you knit. The shawl begins with an elegant lace stitch pattern for the center panel. There is no sewing or seaming since the side panel stitches are picked up along the edges of the center lace panel. The elegant pattern is created using lace stitches - no cable needle is needed!

Growing simply and quickly in stockinette stitch, the side panels are perfect for social knitting or TV watching. You’ll finish knitting the side panels with a couple of repeats of the lace to add extra detail and interest to your shawl, no matter how you wear it!

I created this pattern in honor of Local Yarn Store Day 2023, a brick-and-mortar yarn shop appreciation day designed to show support for small businesses. This special event brings together a unique community of knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners to drive awareness and celebrate the craft.

These yarn shops are amazing places that foster our community of fiber enthusiasts and are the lifeblood of our craft. They need support from their community during these difficult times, and I’m honored to have the ability to create a special design for the fourth year in a row.

To add extra excitement, I will be hosting a Knit-Along with live events, including 2 Knit Nights – all free to attend, and hosted on Zoom.

During the Cast-On Party, I will walk you through the special stitches used in this design to make it easy for you to knit your own.

YARN

DK weight yarn in 1 color; approximately 566 yds/517.5 m

Sample uses Jody Long Ciao (100% Superwash Extrafine Merino Wool, 115 yards/105 m per 50 g); 5 balls in color #009 Cornflower

NEEDLES & NOTIONS

• US 9/5.5 mm needle, circular or straight(or size needed to obtain gauge)

• Darning Needle

• Stitch Markers, 14 total

• Row Counter (or scrap paper)

GAUGE

18 sts and 21 rows = 4”/10 cm, worked flat in stockinette stitch after blocking.

Use a needle that produces a blocked fabric with a look and drape that you are happy with.

Gauge is not crucial to this pattern, but keep in mind that variances in gauge will also affect the amount of yarn used as well as the overall size of your shawl.

If using superwash yarn, it will grow with blocking!
