Jack asks his mother for money to buy Christmas presents in the story, but she explains that they have none to spare due to their poverty. Instead, she teaches Jack about giving from the heart, inspired by the example of Jesus. Jack decides to give his time as presents, starting with helping his skeptical Aunt Jane with chores. He then spends time reading to a blind man, assisting his mother, and cheering up a sick child and his family. Each gift of time brings unexpected joy and gratitude, showing Jack the true spirit of Christmas. In the end, Jack realizes that the best gift he gave was himself, echoing his mother's belief that his presence and kindness were the most precious gifts of all.
