Across The Pond Shawl

The name for this shawl came from a combination of factors. Firstly the two yarns used for the original shawl (large one pictured above) were dyed on opposite sides of the Atlantic … the yarn in the main body is the Stellar Banshee colour by Voolenvine Yarns based in the USA and the edge lace is the Pale Cream colour by The Wool Barn based in the UK. Secondly, I knit most of this shawl on my two flights going to and from the USA on a recent trip, so it was knit literally as I was crossing the pond!

The instructions for the main body portion is only provided in written format but the instructions for the lace edging is both written and charted.

What you will need:

• Yarn:
Small Size – 100g - 400m/440yards of fingering weight yarn, for a single skein shawl. The sample was knit with a contrast colour edging for this size. Yarns used for this sample were Malabrigo Sock in Arco Iris for the main body (400m/440yards per 100grams) and Lavender Lune Yarn Co dyed with Basil (326m/357yards per 100grams) for the edge lace.
Large Size – 200g total yarn needed-100g - 400m/440yards of fingering weight yarn for the main body and 100g – 400m/440yards of fingering weight yarn for the lace edging. Yarns used for this sample were Voolenvine Yarns in Stellar Banshee (400m/440yards in 100grams) for the main body and The Wool Barn in Pale Cream (400m/440yards in 100grams) for the lace edge.
• Needles – 3.75mm (US 5) on Long Cable to accommodate all the stitches at the end.

• Notions – Stitch Markers if you wish to mark out the lace repeats.

• Gauge – Approx 20-22 sts/ 4 inches after blocking (although gauge is really not too important with this shawl as long as you like the fabric you are getting)

Finished Size of Shawl:


Small : 180cm (70 inches) on the longest edge & 28cm (11 inches) deep.
Large: 220cm (86 inches) on the longest edge & 40cm (16 inches) deep.
Please note finished size will vary greatly depending on gauge and how extensively the shawl is blocked.
