This is a simple yet very effective Garter Chevron blanket design, I initially knit this when I was first pregnant with my baby, and it got me through a really rough week of morning sickness where this was the only thing I could knit on. Recently, we found out my Sister in Law is having a baby this Christmas so I decided to knit another one for her little boy. I chose Christmas colours as he will be a Christmas baby but thought it would also be useable year round. The design is super simple and easy to memorise, especially if you use stitch markers. You can also knit this blanket in any weight and to any width/length you wish by making simple adjustments to yarn weight, cast on stitches and number of rows knit. There are notes in the pattern for how to make these changes. It would also serve as a good basis for a scrap blanket if you wish to knit one with Chevrons.

What you will need:

• Yarn: 500g (210m/230yrds per 100gm) of Worsted weight yarn to make the baby blanket size shown in the photos. The yarn used for the sample is KnitPicks Stroll Tweed Fingering (held double) in a 65/25/10 Superwash Merino/Nylon/Donegal Nep blend in Garnet Heather, Firecracker Heather, Oyster Heather, Forest Heather and Sequoia Heather (210m/231yrds per 50gm). A total of 300gms was used to make the baby blanket size shown in the pictures.

NOTE - you can use any weight of yarn you wish this blanket is very adaptable, you will just need to adjust needle size accordingly to get a nice drapey fabric

• Needles – 6mm (US 10) on 80cm (32in) cable to accommodate all the stitches.

• Notions – Stitch Markers to mark the pattern repeats – I used different colours to mark increases and decreases to make things even easier to remember.

• Gauge – Gauge is really not too important with this blanket as long as you like the fabric and drape you are getting. But as a reference the gauge I got on the sample was approx. 4sts per inch after blocking.

Finished Size of Baby Blanket:

Approx. 60cm (24 inches) wide and 95cm (37.5 inches) deep.

Please note finished size will vary greatly depending on gauge, how many pattern repeats you cast on and how many repeats in length you knit, and how extensively the blanket is blocked at the end. Also whether you use a super-wash yarn or non super-wash yarn, or if you choose to use animal or plant fibres, will all have an impact on the finished size.

Pattern Notes for Sizing:

The pattern is set up so you can cast on as may repeat sections as you would like to make the blanket wider or narrower as you wish, you can also increase the number of times you knit the pattern repeat rows to increase/decrease the length of the blanket as well.

Further you can choose to knit this pattern with larger needles and heavier yarn to get a bulkier/squishier blanket or with smaller needles and finer yarn to get a lighter more delicate blanket.

All of the possible changes noted above will have an impact on the total amount of yarn you will need for the blanket.

Each Chevron repeat is 26sts in this pattern, so the blanket consists of a total number of stitches that is divisible by 26 plus 2 stitches (one for each edge).

You can either cast on in multiples of 26sts + 2, or you can actually alter the width of each chevron if you wish to have narrower or wider chevrons. To do this you will increase or decrease the number of plain knit stitches between the Increase & Decrease instructions.
