I had the idea for this shawl for a while before I finally allowed myself to cast it on … I hadn’t fully decided on the shape or exact pattern but I knew I wanted to marl the colours together in the method I used here. It does take a small amount of planning at the start but this is such a quick and satisfying project to work on its totally worth the small amount of extra effort!
I absolutely love how this design turned out and how the colours, while not a traditional fade, just melt into each other making the transitions smooth and painterly in their effect.
The name was inspired by the colours I used in this design as they reminded me of the Starry Night painting by Van Gogh.
This shawl is knit using yarn held triple stranded in Garter stitch which when combined together creates a deliciously squishy fabric which is totally amazing for wrapping up around your neck!
As a result of this it is necessary to have access to scales to weigh your yarn during the project, and to wind your yarns into a Cake or a centre-pull ball as you will be using both ends of the yarn.
4 x 100g - 400m/440yards of fingering weight yarn, in four different colours. Yarn used for this sample was Primrose Yarn Co - Sophia (414yd/379m per 100g – 80/10/10 Superwash Merino / Cashmere / Nylon) in the Embers, Copper Penny Dreadful & Abyss colourways and Woo Sheeps Angus (463yd/424m per 100g – 75/25 Superwash Merino / Nylon) in the Put Your Camel To Bed Colourway.
The yarns will be held triple throughout the pattern (see Colour Blending notes for details on how to do this)
Needles – 6mm (US 10) on Long Cable to accommodate the stitches at the end.
Notions – 8 Stitch Markers, 2-4 half inch sized buttons (optional – see notes at end of pattern), removable stitch marker to mark the right side of the work, and scales for weighing your yarn.
Gauge – Approx 15 sts/ 4 inches – 10 cm after blocking (although gauge is really not too important with this shawl as long as you like the fabric you are getting)
Please note finished size will vary greatly depending on gauge and how extensively the shawl is blocked.
