About the Pattern
When my daughter, Brooklyn, was nine she drew a picture of a girl wearing a shawl and asked if I could knit it for her. There were detailed notes about the shape and stitch details, but without any knitting knowledge, she was designing without constraints. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to bring her dream shawl to life. Many swatches and a few intarsia lessons later, I was able to make her dream a reality!
The half-circle shawl is worked from the top down with a reverse stockinette background and mock cable sun rays that give the shawl its name. The stitch patterns and shaping are easy so you can focus on perfecting your intarsia skills, and having fun with the color combinations.
Yarns
You will need approximately 548 yds (501 m) / 200 g of a DK variegated or speckled yarn for the wedges (yarn B) and 274 yds (251 m) / 100 g of a coordinating solid or tonal DK yarn for the rays and border (yarn A).
The sample was knit with:
Farmer's Daughter Fibers, Juicy DK, 274 yds (251 m) / 100 g in the Honky Tonkin’ (wedges) and Nammoo (rays) colorways
Needles
US 8 (5 mm) needles with a 32 in (81 cm) circular cord.
Gauge
In stockinette stitch, 15 sts x 24 rows = 4 in (10 cm)
