The Arisaka Type 99 is a Japanese bolt-action rifle introduced in 1939 as a replacement for the Type 38. Chambered in 7.7×58mm Arisaka, it features a five-round internal magazine loaded via stripper clips. The standard rifle has a 657mm barrel, an overall length of 1,118mm, and weighs approximately 3.8 kg.

Designed for increased firepower, the Type 99 used a stronger Mauser-style bolt-action system to handle the more powerful 7.7mm cartridge, which offered better stopping power and ballistics compared to the 6.5mm Type 38 round. Early production rifles, known as "early war" Type 99s, featured high-quality construction, a chrome-lined barrel, an anti-aircraft rear sight with foldable wings, and a monopod for stability.

As the war progressed and material shortages worsened, "late-war" or "last-ditch" Type 99s were made with crude finishes, simplified parts, and sometimes lacked a bayonet lug or a proper rear sight.

The Type 99 was issued to Imperial Japanese Army troops in all major theaters of World War II, including the Pacific, China, and Southeast Asia. Despite its durability and power, production never fully replaced the Type 38, and many soldiers continued using the older rifle.
