They hired you to rob a dragon's grave. It was three days dead and still warm, still breathing out gold, and it had one last thing to ask you: stay, and watch me die.

Where Dragons Die is a dragon-fantasy one-shot for fifth edition: a complete, zero-prep adventure of grief, gold, and the price of a witnessed death, built to run in a single evening for a small group of two to three players. Your table are hired poachers. A dying collector pays a fortune to strip one fresh dragon kill in Vardzia Hollow, the hidden valley where dragons go to die. The road in runs through claw-furrowed caverns where something enormous has been breathing in the dark, and the breathing is slowing. At the heart of the valley you find the Warm Grave, a dragon dead three days and still warm, its blood still liquid gold. You begin to poach. That is when the scavengers come, and that is when the wyvern lands.

The wyvern serves Sulkhan, the second-oldest of its kind, and Sulkhan is dying. A dragon's death without a witness does not take, and the guardian has chosen your table to witness its passing. The whole adventure runs on the Passing, a quiet mechanic the players feel rather than track: the breathing in the dark grows slower, standing stones ring in the distance, and the ground itself begins to sour as the guardian's hours run out. Honour the dead and the valley answers in kind. Take what is not yours and it remembers.

Halfway in, the night forks. Serve the funeral rite the wyvern offers, a pilgrimage with teeth, or refuse it and cross the valley's bad ground alone, a running fight against the place itself. Both roads teach the same hard truths by different doors, and both end at the Heart Hollow, where the guardian lies coiled and waiting. No two tables walk the same road to the end.

The climax is a wake that keeps trying to become a fight: a three-phase confrontation with the dying itself, fought while the collector's retrieval crew arrives to take the heart by force. And it ends on a real choice, not a dice roll. Walk out with the goods and let the guardian die unwitnessed. Stay, and keep the valley as its new keepers. Or witness the death fully and carry home what it leaves behind. Three endings, and your table owns the choice. What makes it land is the awe. Sulkhan is not a monster to be slain. It is an ancient, courteous, exhausted creature asking for the one thing a hundred years of guarding earned it, and your players will rob it and mourn it in the same breath.

What's Inside:

  • A complete 80-plus page one-shot: four acts and seventeen named scenes, ready to run tonight with zero prep.
  • The Passing, a quiet narrative engine the table feels as the guardian's death draws near, with no extra bookkeeping.
  • A branching middle where the party chooses its road, and three distinct endings the table decides for itself.
  • Seven original creatures with full stat blocks, from grave-scavengers to the wyvern herald, plus a three-phase boss built so it never one-shots a hero.
  • Four ready-made characters at level 2, so anyone at the table can sit down and play.
  • Four maps, an area reference map plus three battle maps, drawn in a hand-inked, old-woodcut style.
  • Original pen-and-ink interior art throughout, two printable player handouts, six opening hooks, a What If contingency guide, and five campaign seeds.
